50K Ultra training plan,
on your Garmin.
A 50K is the shortest ultra and the most approachable, but it is still a genuine step change from the marathon. The terrain is usually harder, the pace is slower, and the things that decide your day are eating, walking the climbs and looking after your feet. Fitness is necessary and nowhere near sufficient.
What a 50K ultra week looks like
Build length: 16 to 24 weeks, depending on your marathon base
Weekly volume: 60 to 110 km a week, with significant vertical gain
Five runs including back-to-back long days at the weekend, typically something like 25 km on Saturday followed by 15 km on tired legs on Sunday. Hills wherever you can find them.
The session that decides your 50K ultra
Back-to-back long runs. Running a decent distance the day after a long effort trains the specific fatigue of an ultra far better than one enormous run, and it costs far less recovery.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Fuelling for a 50K ultra
The single biggest determinant of your day. You will be out there for five hours or more, so real food usually beats gels, and you need to practise eating while moving. Most 50K disasters are fuelling failures wearing a fitness costume.
Which Garmin metrics actually matter here
- Grade-adjusted pace, since raw pace is meaningless on hills
- Elevation gain, the number that actually describes your week
- Training load, to keep back-to-back weekends from compounding
- Battery life planning, because a long day can outlast a small watch
How to get this plan onto your watch
- Free option, Garmin Coach: covers 5K, 10K and half marathon plans and pushes each workout to the watch. There is nothing for the marathon or ultra distances, and none of it is built around your specific race date.
- Adaptive option, Custom Gains: say your race and date in plain English. It reads your Garmin history, builds the 50K ultra block around your actual fitness, and pushes each session to the watch, reshuffling the week when you miss days or your recovery drops.

FAQ
How long does it take to train for a 50K?
Sixteen to twenty-four weeks depending on where you start. Coming from a recent marathon, the shorter end is realistic. Coming from half marathons, give yourself the longer build.
Is a 50K much harder than a marathon?
It is different rather than simply harder. The pace is slower and there is walking, but the duration, the terrain and the need to eat properly make it a distinct problem.
Should I walk during a 50K?
Yes, and plan it. Walking the steep climbs is what experienced ultra runners do, and it is faster over the whole day than trying to run everything and blowing up.
What should I eat during a 50K?
More than you expect, and start early. Many runners move to real food rather than gels at this duration. Whatever you choose, practise it on your back-to-back weekends first.
