5K training plan,
on your Garmin.
The 5K is short enough that it hurts the whole way and long enough that you cannot fake it. Training for one is mostly a question of running easy often enough to build the engine, then adding a small amount of genuinely hard work. Most people invert that ratio and wonder why they plateau.
What a 5K week looks like
Build length: 8 to 10 weeks
Weekly volume: 25 to 45 km a week
Three to four runs. One long run building toward 10 to 12 km, one interval session, and the rest easy.
The session that decides your 5K
VO2max intervals. Five times three minutes hard with equal jog recovery is the classic, and it is the session that actually moves a 5K time.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Fuelling for a 5K
Nothing during the race. It is over too quickly to matter. Eat normally beforehand and do not experiment on race morning.
Which Garmin metrics actually matter here
- Heart-rate zones, to keep easy days genuinely easy
- The race predictor, as a sanity check on your goal pace
- Body Battery and sleep, to decide whether today's intervals happen
- Lap pace, so interval reps stay even instead of fading
How to get this plan onto your watch
- Free option, Garmin Coach: covers 5K, 10K and half marathon plans and pushes each workout to the watch. There is nothing for the marathon or ultra distances, and none of it is built around your specific race date.
- Adaptive option, Custom Gains: say your race and date in plain English. It reads your Garmin history, builds the 5K block around your actual fitness, and pushes each session to the watch, reshuffling the week when you miss days or your recovery drops.

FAQ
How long does it take to train for a 5K?
If you can already run 20 to 30 minutes continuously, 8 to 10 weeks is enough to arrive sharp. Starting from nothing takes longer, and the couch to 5K route is the better entry point.
How many days a week should I run for a 5K?
Three to four. Four gives you room for one interval session, one long run and two easy runs, which is the whole plan in a sentence.
What is the best workout to get faster at 5K?
Intervals at around your current 5K effort. Five times three minutes hard with equal jogging between is a reliable staple. One of these a week is plenty alongside easy running.
Should I run a 5K every week to get faster?
No. Racing weekly leaves no room to build. Race occasionally and spend the rest of the time training, mostly easy.
